Amusement Ride Safety

Amusement ride injuries are extremely rare, though almost all ride-related accidents can be prevented. Please read and follow these Amusement Ride Safety Tips to ensure the whole family has a enjoyable, and completely safe day at the fete!

Stay Cool and Cover up: Instances of sunburn and heat exhaustion are common in Qld, particularly on hot days in Autumn, Spring and Summer. Water is your best friend for preventing heat-related illnesses, so drink plenty the day before, and during a warm day outdoors. Apply a waterproof sunscreen regularly throughout the event, remain in shade where possible, and always wear an appropriate hat or sun visor.

Stay clear of restricted areas: Never enter a restricted area. This includes any area where power leads or cooking equipment may be in use. The public are generally prohibited from the back of hot food stalls, amusement rides, generators, stages, commercial vehicles and trucks.

Understand Ride Height Restrictions: Take note of all amusement ride height restrictions well before the event, and understand which attractions you (and your children) can and cannot ride. Amusement Ride Operators check the height of all riders prior to entry, though the parents of young children must accept some responsibility in pre-determining the rides their children can access. This will save time waiting in a queue, and the child's disappointment in being refused entry due to Height Restrictions. We suggest all parents follow these steps:

1. Measure the height of each child before the fete

2. Determine which attractions he/she can and cannot access at the fete by checking the height requirements listed above

3. Confirm with your child which attractions they are permitted to ride

4. Explain why height restrictions are in place

5. Ensure the rules are adhered to on the day of the fete

Generally speaking, children should be able to receive, understand, and follow instructions to ride most attractions alone.

Accept Restrictions: Under no circumstances should a parent encourage an under-sized child to ride, or ask a Ride Operator to "bend" the rules and allow an under-sized child to ride. All parents must accept that Height and Safety restrictions are in place for their children's safety; must be enforced; and are not open for negotiation.

Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions may prohibit a child or adult from riding. No child with a plaster cast or brace should access an inflatable amusement device, due to the risk of further injuries to the wearer, and being a possible hazard to other riders. The same rule applies to certain mechanical amusement devices including the Super Slide, and Dodgem Cars.

Large thrill type amusement rides, which exert high "G Forces", normally have the following restrictions: * No expectant mothers * No back or neck condition * No heart condition * Not recommended for those susceptible to motion sickness.

Please speak the the ride operator at the fete should you require further details or clarification.

First Aid: Should an accident or injury occur during the fete, please report immediately to the St John's First Aid Officer, who will be on-site for the entire event.

Don't jump the line: Line queues are something we all have to deal with, whether attending the local fete, or major theme park. Under no circumstance should any person "jump the line" or "cut the queue". This not only increases the waiting time of riders further down the queue, it becomes the source of heated arguments between parents and children alike.

Ride safe: When riding on an enclosed amusement device "car", remain seated at all times, with your hands on the grab bar and your feet/knees inside the car. Make sure that the Lap Bar or Rider restraint is in place, snug and locked in. If the ride starts to move, and your restraint is not in place, immediately alert the ride operator. Hands/arms must be kept inside the "car" at all times. Under no circumstance should a rider reach out to touch any part of the ride, or member of the public outside the fence line.

Alert Ride Operators about problems: If you notice something wrong, or a potential risk of accident or injury, please alert the ride operator immediately. Their job is to keep you safe. All assistance from the public will be appreciated.

Securing Loose Items: In the interests of rider safety, all loose items (Mobile Phone, Bags, Cameras etc) must be left with a non-riding companion.

Food and Drinks: Please finish all food and drinks before joining a ride queue. No food or Drinks will be permitted on any rides.

Do not misbehave: Minor injuries such as burns and bruises are often the result of riders misbehaving and not obeying Ride Rules. Any person disobeying the ride rules, engaging in horseplay, or acting in a way that is considered unsafe by Ride Operators will be prohibited from riding.
